The opening of the new centre, Derwentside, was announced by Tom Pursglove MP, the Minister for Justice and Tackling Illegal Migration.
Derwentside will be the only removal centre dedicated to women and the Home Office hopes it will be ready to operate by the end of the year.
According to Tom Pursglove MP, Derwentside is a fundamental part of the “Nationality and Borders Bill and the New Plan for Immigration which will make it easier to remove people who have no right to be in the UK.”
According to Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "Detention plays a limited, but crucial role in maintaining effective immigration control and securing our borders. It is right that those with no right to remain in the UK are removed if they do not leave voluntarily.”
